Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Coming in April 2026
What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, therapeutic massage technique designed to support the function of the lymphatic system. Using slow, rhythmic, and precise movements, MLD encourages the natural flow of lymph fluid throughout the body.
Unlike traditional massage therapy, MLD uses very light pressure and specific directional strokes to stimulate lymph vessels just beneath the skin. The goal is to assist the body in moving excess fluid, waste products, and cellular debris toward healthy lymph nodes for filtration and elimination.

How the Lymphatic System Works
The lymphatic system is an essential part of the immune and circulatory systems. It:
-
Maintains fluid balance in the tissues
-
Removes metabolic waste and toxins
-
Filters pathogens through lymph nodes
-
Supports immune response
-
Assists in healing and tissue recovery
When lymph flow becomes impaired—due to surgery, injury, inflammation, or prolonged inactivity—fluid can accumulate in the tissues. This may result in swelling, discomfort, and delayed healing.

Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage
When performed by a trained massage therapist, MLD may help:
-
Reduce swelling and fluid retention
-
Support post-surgical recovery
-
Decrease inflammation
-
Improve circulation of lymphatic fluid
-
Promote tissue healing
-
Reduce discomfort associated with edema
-
Encourage relaxation of the nervous system
Clients often report feeling lighter, less congested, and deeply relaxed following treatment.

Who May Benefit From MLD?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be appropriate for individuals experiencing:
-
Post-surgical swelling (including cosmetic procedures)
-
Mild to moderate edema
-
Lymphedema (with medical guidance)
-
Sports-related swelling or injury
-
Sinus congestion
-
Chronic inflammation
-
General fluid retention
A thorough health intake is conducted to determine whether MLD is suitable for each client.

What to Expect During a Session
MLD sessions differ from traditional massage in both technique and sensation:
-
Very light, skin-stretching movements
-
Slow, rhythmic, repetitive strokes
-
Targeted work along specific lymphatic pathways
-
Minimal or no oil
-
A calm, quiet treatment environment
Pressure is gentle and should never feel painful. The treatment is designed to stimulate lymph flow—not muscle tissue.

Safety & Contraindications
While MLD is safe for many individuals, it may not be appropriate for clients with:
-
Acute infections
-
Active blood clots (DVT)
-
Uncontrolled congestive heart failure
-
Untreated malignancy
-
Certain kidney conditions
Medical clearance may be required in some cases. Your safety and well-being are always the top priority.
